Who We Are: Burks UMC
Burks United Methodist Church
Burks UMC has a rich and long history here in Hixson, TN.
Burks began here in this spot when the area was mainly comprised of farms. The building where we worship today is approximately 30 years of age, but we have been a community of faith for 60 + years. The current sanctuary was designed to incorporate the previous building. When you are in the narthex enjoying a cup of coffee from the Hebrews Cafe, you are standing in the last sanctuary. We enter to worship through the faithfulness of those who came before us.
Who are we as United Methodists? I encourage you to check this link, as it offers both a brief description and further links with many details about the UMC. The UMC believes in God the Father Almighty, Maker of Heaven and Earth. We believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, Our Lord. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Triune God. We believe that life is a journey and we go uphill and down in our faith and our belief, but as our denominational founder, John Wesley,  said, we believe we, with God’s help, eventually will get it right, even if that is not until we reach heaven. In the Wesleyan way, that is called “going on to perfection”. That is a lofty goal, and to get there we must support one another. That is Grace. God provides it, and we share it with others. Forgiveness, encouragement, reconciliation, mercy, love, inclusiveness…all of these are elements of Grace and it is what sets the United Methodist faith apart.
Another unique feature of our denomination is connectionalism. All United Methodist churches are part of a vast, worldwide network. We at Burks UMC are a part of the Chattanooga District. Our district is a part of the Holston Annual Conference, which is both an organizational structure and a yearly meeting. Our conference is a part of the Southeastern Jurisdiction of the UMC, which is a part of the General Conference of the United Methodist Church. There are approximately 12.8 million persons who identify as United Methodist worldwide. What does this mean to you?  It means that if you are alone and you want to do something to help, you can only do what you can do with your own personal resources from where you are at that time. If you are together with other people who want to help, then you can accomplish so much more. The missions of the United Methodist church are active worldwide at all times. We support them as a denomination, not just by ourselves. That is one way in which together, we can do so much more.
In this church, we support missions strongly. We support individuals and families of any structure. We offer ministries to most demographics, and as we grow, we hope to offer more. If you don’t find a ministry that you feel called to, then get a couple of friends, see a staff member, and let’s see where God leads.  We are diverse culturally, and seek to continue to grow in this area. Everyone is welcome at Burks UMC. We have over 20 small groups, 11 Sunday School Classes where scripture is delved into on all levels for any age, we have a super active Men’s ministry called Men@Burks, and are growing a new women’s ministry. As you can see on our missions page, we are involved with many local missions, and those abroad.  As a congregation, we just sent 53 home care relief buckets to Ishe Anesu Ministry in Zimbabwe at a total value of $1500.
We hope you will come and visit Burks UMC. It is a place where folks feel at home, they find friends, they find a place to belong. We hope you will too!
