Missions News and Events

MISSIONS VISION STATEMENT:

At Burks we support missions with our hands, our feet, our prayers, and our finances.
We support local missions within our community, missions within our country,
and throughout the world.  It is our goal to help each person find a place of
service to which God is calling them so that together we can reach out to all.

It was 5:00pm Thursday evening, May 10th. We unloaded the church van at First Baptist Church in downtown, and I pulled out my list:

10 pans of corn pudding: check

7 gallons of green beans: check

5 gallons of slaw: check

160 rolls: check

15 smiling faces: check

We headed into the kitchen where we met our friends from Grace UMC who were busy slicing and preparing oodles of dessert. Within moments other friends joined us from Fairview UMC with a seemingly endless supply of chicken tenders. While we prepared to serve dinner, our guests were arriving. We walked among them, greeting them with handshakes and hugs. They gathered in couples, small groups, and sometimes alone. Some were quite and reserved. Some were laughing and talking. Some carried babies and some carried back packs. They were reading books, drinking coffee, and sharing struggles. After a day which undoubtedly found many of them standing in lines – lines to eat – to ride the bus – to get vouchers – to shower – or to wash clothes, we offered them a chance to just sit and “be served” a hot meal. As the blessing was said, 130 friends bowed heads to thank God for this food and the hands that had prepared it.

A hot meal may be what we “serve,” but what we “share” is God’s love. For this hour, they were treated as honored guests, and we had the awesome privilege of serving these who are so very precious to our God.

I just want to thank you, people of Burks, for making corn pudding, baking hams, and icing cakes. Thank you for serving dinner, washing dishes, and cleaning tables. Thank you for sending money, sharing ideas, and offering prayers. Thank you, people of Burks, for being people of God, for always giving, always sharing, and always loving.

Join us on June 14th when we once again serve Mustard Tree Ministries. If you think you are going only to “give,” you are mistaken. These friends we serve also “give” and we are blessed.

“…Give away your life; you’ll find life given back, but not merely given back – given back with bonus and blessing. Giving, not getting, is the way. Generosity begets generosity.” Luke 6:38 (The Message)

If you're not planning to help out with our Hands-On Mission Project at the CAFB this Saturday (or if you can get there earlier), here is another way to help out:

Your help is needed this Saturday, May 19, at the Chattanooga Food Bank, 2009 Curtain Pole Road, Chattanooga, TN 37406 (off Amnicola Drive) to bag 42,000 pounds of sweet potatoes, beginning at 8:00 a.m. This project is sponsored by Christ UMC. The potatoes will be distributed to area food banks and needy persons.

Have you ever wondered what folks are doing at Burks UMC in the local community?  Burks UMC folks are busy serving in a multitude of ministries and organizations!  Beyond local outreach, there are folks involved in national and international missions too.

This article is to give you just a taste of what is going on at Burks UMC.

Take a look at the logos..... not only to see where Burks UMC is involved, but to see what catches your eye.  Maybe there's a place you hadn't considered previously that you'd like to learn more about. There are brochures in the Narthex for all the various local outreach ministries with contact information if you desire more information.  Contact the Team Leaders that are listed on those brochures.  Find out when they are serving again and check it out.

Thanks to all who are stepping out and reaching into the community!!

Life at My Sister's House has been active some days and slow on other days. We've had 12 women come through our doors for our services and clothing since we've opened.

Our most pressing need at this moment is volunteers!  We need women to be available to meet with the women who come to us.  All you need is a willing spirit and a caring heart.  You don't need major skills.  We can train you in the basic intake process.  Veteran volunteers will help you learn the ropes.

Check your calendar and check the May and June calendars posted here to see when is a good time for you to volunteer.

Check out our Facebook page.

Contact the team leaders, Pat Marshall and/or Leila Niemann, with any questions.

This year for our "Change the World" project we are going to join with the Chattanooga Area Food Bank mission outreach to pack sack packs for children for the weekends and pack food boxes.

The event is from 9:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m.

If you want to carpool, meet in the back church parking lot at 9:00 a.m.

If you have any questions, call the Team Leaders Jere Turner (847-6995) or Terri Lane (847-9260).

There is a sign up sheet on the missions table in the Narthex.  We need a minimum of 20 people to go for our commitment to the Chattanooga Area Food Bank.
