Ruth Clarke and St. Nick Anderson #25 Orlando Magic
Scan_1

Marylin Wukits, an active senior at Burks for 17+ years did some magic for her sister’s 97th birthday. She arranged a magical visit from St. Nick

Her sister, Ruth Clarke, has a prescription for a long life: “find something to be interested in and keep at it.” She has been an avid Orlando Magic ffan for years.  Marylin wanted her sister to have a memorable 97th birthday and she contacted Nick Anderson, an all-time leading scorer for the Magic to surprise her on her birthday. Marylin learned that Nick is a hero on and off the court and “slam-dunked” Ruth’s birthday with a visit.  During his career, Nick was involved in numerous contributions in his community. He founded 'Nickels for Nick', a program that raises money to support Meals on Wheels.Anderson scored more than 10,000 points in a Magic uniform but he’ll be remembered just as much for the assists he gave off the court.  Some around the Orlando community dubbed him “Saint Nick” for his generosity.  Anderson displayed an especially heartfelt touch around the holidays, planning Thanksgiving dinners for senior citizens and leading Christmas toy drives for kids who otherwise might have been forgotten.  This display of love for her sister, and others, is not uncommon for Marylin. She is an active volunteer at Burks and assists the Gideons . In 1980, she and her husband became a husband and wife team for this bible-placing mission. Her husband Richard has gone to the Lord. But Marylin, like Ruth has a creed: “find something to be interested in and keep at it.”

Long-time Burks members, Milton and Puzzie Kyle, got the Eldredge class excited about helping a mission project they have been working on for the past four and a half years - collecting Christian literature for the missions. The Kyles learned from a friend who just completed a 17-year tour of duty in Brazil, that 80% of the new converts do not have Bibles or any Christian literature to support their growth in the faith. The need was growing but so was the postage to ship literature to other countries.

Then the Lord showed us a way.  Christians, working together, can meet  this need

Through a contact at Christ United Methodist Church we were able to make a connection with Edwin L. Hodges Ministries in Decatur, Alabama. Now we are working with Hixson United and Red Bank United and many other area churches in sending literature to English-speaking ministries in many Third World countries. January 2012, Ashland Terrace Christian Church joined our campaign to connect others to Christ through sharing Christian literature

During 2011 the Eldredge class here at Burks United collected over 1200 lbs of Bibles, concordances, Sunday school literature and Christian books for ELHM.  We are planning to expand this effort church-wide in 2012.
